The best Christmas present for the Wellington Rugby Referees Association came recently with the announcement by TSB to support the WRRA.
“The refereeing membership have just been blown away with TSB’s sponsorship offer, which will principally be reflected by the TSB logo on the front of jersey,” said WRRA Chairman, Ian Dallas.
“Each season there appear to be more games requiring referees, so we are doing more around recruiting, training and outfitting them – and that comes at a significant cost – so TSB’s support has come at a very welcome time.”
For TSB local manager, David Jackson, the decision to throw their support behind rugby in the Wellington region was a fairly easy one to make.
“We are a wholly owned New Zealand bank, so are delighted to be able to lend a hand to the refereeing volunteers of New Zealand’s game.”
“While we are a big player in the national banking sector, we are still a local bank looking to support the local community, and if that support can give referees an advantage, then we’re happy with that.”
Every week during the season, the WRRA assign referees and assistant referees, to rugby games from premier men and women, all the way down to U12 school level. That’s over 120+ fixtures a weekend, involving hundreds of players from Upper Hutt & Plimmerton, to Miramar.
The sponsorship from TSB will go towards the recruitment and retention of referees, as well as being able to provide them with essential playing strip, tracksuits and bags.
